Reimagining mental health education in schools

Decode is taking a unique approach to mental health education, using social media-inspired content and peer storytelling to make learning engaging and relatable.
The Decode Mental Health and Wellbeing Program offers a fresh and innovative approach to mental health education in schools, to engage students and support teachers. Combining social media-inspired content with peer-led lived experience storytelling, Decode makes complex mental health topics accessible and relevant for students in years 5-8. This unique approach makes for informative content that also aims to reduce stigma and promote open conversations around mental health.
Developed by Matterworks and hosted by Education Perfect, Decode is backed by research from the Centre for Community Child Health. The program delivers evidence-based, curriculum-aligned content covering important topics such as emotions, resilience, and relationships. Through short, relatable videos, students hear directly from young people their own age, sharing personal mental health journeys that make the learning experience meaningful and ultimately more impactful.
“Social media isn’t going anywhere, and it’s far from black and white. The real opportunity lies in leveraging what works on these platforms to connect young people with evidence-based content.”
Sarah Wyse (Matterworks co-founder and CEO)
A key feature of Decode is its dual focus: while providing valuable mental health resources for students, it also supports teachers through professional development. Teachers have access to on-demand podcasts and research-based discussions to help build confidence in addressing mental health topics in the classroom. This integrated approach contributes to a supportive and informed school environment.
A recent evaluation of Decode by the Centre showed promising results. Notably, 86% of teachers rated the program highly, describing it as age-appropriate, relevant, and effective in fostering open conversations in the classroom. Students also found the content engaging, with over two-thirds reporting that they gained valuable skills applicable to their everyday lives, and many expressed an interest in further content on mental health topics.
Looking ahead, Decode is committed to expanding its reach and enhancing the learning experience, with additional content will address a wider range of topics related to mental health, such as neurodiversity and inclusion. With continued support from educators, students, and mental health professionals, Decode is poised to become a key resource for improving mental health literacy and nurturing a positive, supportive school culture.
