Natural disasters: family guide

17/03/2025

Preparing for the possibility of a natural disaster is part of life for many Australians. Events such as bushfires, floods or cyclones can happen quickly and without warning. As well as the practical preparations, parents also have to consider emotionally preparing and supporting their children.

The Raising Children Network has just released a family guide to natural disasters – resources covering planning and preparing for natural disasters and advice for families recovering after experiencing a disaster event.

The resources include how to involve children and teens in preparing for a natural disaster, and tips on how to keep children healthy, safe and calm if going to an evacuation centre is required. There is also an article on how parents can help their children return to school after a natural disaster or traumatic event, and resources for families of children with additional needs.

Please feel free to share these important resources with the families you work with.
